pick a Sydney suburb for me to shoot

All this sponsorship raising/sitting on my behind is making me antsy. I need to get back out there to explore
and photograph. So, do you have a Sydney suburb you'd like me to snap that wasn't included in 52 Suburbs?
The suburb most requested within the next two days will be chosen and henceforth visited.

  1. Rose Bay- you came so close last time.

Tones of history and great harbour shots, also there is the Davis Cup on this weekend that could provide some extra inspiration.

Also the sea plane port- first airport in Australia.

Churches and Synagogues, beaches and cafes

What more do you need :)

  2. Palm Beach. It's beautiful up there.

  3. Breakfast Point.. one of ther newest suburbs.. very Truman Show-ish but interesting...

  5. Okay- as much as I love my own suburb, have to agree with Uge from Aquabumps.. 52 Suburbs goes underwater!!

  6. Engadine, South of Sutherland... a lovely suburb surrounded by bush. I used to live there as a kid (I now live in Melbourne) and visited it recently... The people were surprisingly warm and accepting of my transsexual journey since I had left, something I didn't expect at all.

  7. Erskineville! Many hidden delights in a generally delightful suburb.

  8. Ultimo! it missed out last time, and would love attention
    Hope you're doing well.

  9. Whale Beach, the best suburb in Sydney.

  10. Ashfield!
There's an amazing old camera store owned by a 92 year old Russian born Chinese man that would be incredible to photograph. And a delicious fruit store!

  11. Now here is a challenge for you Louise...
    Rydalmere.

  12. I agree with vegemitethecat - I love Erskineville!

  13. Chippendale - lovely trees, old factories, parks, guerilla gardens...and soon it will change with the building of new flats.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Berala - wonderful old (formerly Golden Fleece) petrol station. My dad, Tom 'Tomcat' Ryan, was the mechanic there in the 50s.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Concord West. We have mangroves.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I will vote for Engadine too. It is lovely.
Or next suburb along Heathcote.... Heathcote Hall would be worth a visit for sure.

  17. Malabar or Long Bay before 1933 - between La Perouse and Maroubra is still like a small village. The headlands have no housing - South Side has Randwick Golf course up to Pt Julienne, where Christo covered the cliffs in plastic in the name of art during the 1970s. The Northern headland has some fantastic old buildings built for defence during WW2. It's a true hidden gem!

  18. Come to Parramatta !
It's at the very centre of Sydney.

  19. North Sydney, hopefully encompassing Blues Point, Mc Mahons Pt & Lavender Bay. Lots of fond memories, whic I'd love rekindled.

  20. Mortdale! Just bought a house there and have no idea what I'm in for. Well, I have some idea, but not a 52-Suburbs-depth idea.

  21. I'm going to say Heathcote. I went to high school there, it'd be great to see it through your eyes...

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree with Ros - Palm Beach. I love the walk along the beach/bush tracks there where countless golden orb spiders hang out in their webs directly above your head... it would be so photogenic!

    ReplyDelete
  23. So many good ideas ... Mosman, Whale Beach, Palm Beach, Heathcote, North Sydney.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Petersham - Sydney's little Portugal! Love those custard tarts and piri piri chicken...

    ReplyDelete
  25. please visit the sleepy suburb of TEMPE, before the onslaught of Ikea !!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Parramatta: such an interesting mix of the old and the new. You must check out the Polish deli near the station, the old bathhouse in Parramatta Park and the scene of last week's seige on George Street

  27. North Sydney, Parramatta, West Ryde or Waverton

  28. Whats wrong with good old Lane Cove, prove to me that it is not boring like some people say. I live here and i love it, the river, the people, the smiles, the diversity if you scratch the surface... go on... give it a go....

Hmm sorry apart from anonymous not sure how to leave details..

  29. Crows Nest - from the Gore Hill cemetery - to the St Leonards towers - to the Crowie Kulchur

    ReplyDelete
  30. Kurnell, lot of contrasts over there.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Okay, I must admit that this is my second post - but how about Ashfield? Ugly on the surface, but lots of beauty if you dig a little bit.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Will have to vote for my local, Ashfield. Lots of history and diversity, and St John's church and cemetery worth checking out.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Bungan, you've gotta show the castle!!
    xx

    ReplyDelete
  34. Caringbah. You haven't really covered much of the shire. It will be a challenge but there are hidden beauties in pockets of the suburb. You just have to look hard enough.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I would have to vote Whale Beach to Palm Beach - it's the perfect time of year with everyone shedding layers to feel the sun!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Parramatta - changed so much over the last 20 or so years and has a fabulous history - old government house, st john's church & cemetery, lennox bridge, king's school, burnside homes etc etc etc. I'll be your guide :)

  37. The beautiful waterways around Drummoyne/Russell Lea!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have to vote for Jannali too! A lovely unassuming suburb with great food.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Regents Park. I work there and would love someone to find some beauty in the suburb. There doesn't seem to be much!

    ReplyDelete
  40. shalvey, blackett, plumpton. go west!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Carlingford or Epping

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think Parramatta would be good, or Rosehill - somewhere from colonial days in the first few years of the First Fleet. There should be remnants somewhere...! Homebush would also be good, or anywhere along the Parramatta River. Cockatoo Island. Gladesville has the old Mental Hospital which is on amazing grounds, Rozelle has Callan Park.
    Hope that helps.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Kellyville or one of the many other McMansion suburbs.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Can't believe you didn't do Leichhardt and Croydon - would love to see you make it interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Zetland...

Most people are unaware of its existence as it is overwhelmed by the surrounds of Waterloo, Roseberry and Alexandria- except for those who live there. Go to Green Square station to see a mix of suits, students and savoury souls!

Enjoy the posts and so happy to hear of your success!

  46. North Sydney and its little-known neighbour Waverton, a hidden gem near the Harbour.

    ReplyDelete
  47. What about Currawong? http://www.currawong.com.au/
We've stayed there a couple of times and it's never left my heart. I think of those weekends constantly. There is so much inspiration there including a strong aboriginal connection. Have you ever been there? Pruxxx

  48. Dear all - Thank you so much for your great suggestions. I've tallied them all up, including the ones sent to me via email, twitter and facebook.
The winning suburb is - well, you'll see in about a week's time!

  49. Drummoyne! I love this suburb, but it is small so wont win.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Croydon! The friendliest suburb in Sydney :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Coogee or Mosman please - I love them both :)

  52. It has to be Como. What other suburb has a picnic destination called 'The Pleasure Grounds' which combines the Marina, Tidal Pool, boat hire and Rowing Club. Not to mention 80 year old Ted the Butcher who prepares every order from scratch. If you want six lamb chops Ted fetches the whole beast from the cool room and works his magic. If he was allowed to have saw dust on the floor he would. Oh, there's also the pub, where Henry Lawson use to drink, lovingly recreated after a fire in the 90's.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I just noticed that there has been two votes for Jannali. Como is its neighbour. Kill two birds with one photo shoot.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Rockdale. I find it challenging to find anything amazingly unique about this suburb.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Bondi, Rockdale or Leichhardt.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ashfield! Come to little Shanghai!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Earlwood or Stanmore...
    love your blog and book!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Mt Druitt! If anyone can find beauty in a suburb, it's you. And I'd love to see what you come up with.

    ReplyDelete
  59. What about Tempe? It's the last stop in the 'inner west'! We're more than the Tempe Tip. It's great houses and friendly folks. Have a look.
